HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

I’m so excited about New Years.  We don’t go out.  We buy cider (for me) and beer (for him), because we’re both light weights.  A small cheesecake.  Line up a movie theme night.  And then we get the dogs ready for celebrating the arrival of a new year!

On New Year’s Eve, we’ll walk our dogs for at least 3 miles a couple times a day, have a rowdy play session in the yard, and then we get them ready for the night.

The exercise is a great way to calm a dog’s fear of fireworks.  Sydney and Blue will be fine, Rodrigo needs a little something extra.

One year we tried to medicate Rodrigo, but that didn’t work out very well.  I thought the medication would mellow him out, but what it did was dampen down his anxiety, so he didn’t have any fear when he took off to the woods at night.  We’re fast too, so we caught up with Rodrigo quickly and guided him back to home.

We go through all this trouble, because we live near the Tulalip Reservation in a city that allows fireworks.  No one around here buys just fireworks.  That would be stupid and wouldn’t properly welcome in 2013.  Everyone buys explosives and they freak our dogs out and guarantee that none of us (except my boyfriend) get any sleep.

This year, we’re going to try the ace bandage wrap for Rodrigo, because I hear that it may calm a dog’s fear of fireworks…

That’s in 1 of the Ttouch books. I’ve never used it so will be interested in hearing how it works for you. I used melatonin for my shep mix who was thunderstorm/fireworks phobic and it worked well for her.

Neat idea! Fortunately, Sage doesn’t seem to be afraid of fireworks, but we’ve had dogs that were. I’ll be anxious to hear how it worked.

Our dogs slept through the fireworks. No need for the ace bandage. Rodrigo had a nervous moment, but it didn’t last long, maybe 15 minutes, and he got some hugs and attention then a treat and then he was fine. They slept straight through midnight.

      LOL

Should this work better than the Thundershirt?

I don’t think so, Jana, because there’s the chance that the dog isn’t wrapped correctly. With the Thundershirt, I think it’s pretty hard to mess it up. :)

      Happy New Year!

Hi Kimberly, what do you think of Thundershirts? Same theory pretty much right?

Yep, same theory. What I love about the Thundershirts is that they take the guess work out of it all. The wrap isn’t easy to do; I tried on New Year’s Eve and found that I didn’t buy a long enough one so it didn’t work for Rodrigo. A Thundershirt just goes onto our dog; the only mistake is if we buy the wrong size :)
