The only games we really play are throw and chase with the frisbee or a ball – we throw, the dogs grab and run, and we give chase.  It’s silly, but we all have fun and get great exercise.

This video by David the Dog Trainer is great, because we need to start training our dogs to have some restraint at play time.  Rodrigo will jump up and grab the frisbee if you don’t throw it fast enough.  When he was 30 pounds, not really a big deal.  Now that he’s 70 pounds – we’re learning once again that dog training never ends.

Whenever I need a brush up on dog training, I’ve found YouTube to be a valuable resource for dog training tips, but I highly suggest that you follow a reputable dog trainer, because not all are created equal and anyone can call themselves an expert and post a YouTube video.

I’m not sure if Ellen and Portia created this video or if a fan created it; but I love this.  One of my many dream of dreams is to be a guest on the Ellen show.  I think she’s amazing and I love her personality, humor, and how she uses her influence for good.  My absolute favorite moment was when Ellen and Oprah were talking about the cover of Oprah’s magazine, O.

When blogging becomes a full time gig, I will have Ellen hour every weekday so that I can sit with a cup of tea and watch before sitting down to work.

This past summer, we noticed Rodrigo developed a slight limp after a 2 mile walk.  After a while, we took him to the vet and he thought maybe it’s a sprain from playing too hard.  Sounded right – he’s a rough and tumble kind of dog  - so we shortened the walks and the dog park visits, and the limp seemed to clear up.

When fall came, the limp returned and it was harsher this time.  We put Rodrigo on glucosamine, get pain pills from our vet, and scheduled him for an x ray.  That’s when we learned that during his growth, the bones in his elbow didn’t grow properly and this has lead to arthritis.  Surgery is an option, but it’s not a permanent fix.  Our vet recommended glucosamine/chondroitin/msm and we got both the liquid version (it’ll soak in those joints faster) and the chewables.  I also (me, not Johan) scheduled a Reiki session with Reiki Fur Babies.

Our hearts were breaking, because Rigo couldn’t go to the dog park, he couldn’t go on walks, and he couldn’t run for more than a few minutes.  It killed me when I would see him hopping, not putting pressure on his leg.  He couldn’t tell us where he hurt, but he could show us that he was hurting.  He’s an active, happy dog and he was in pain and we had to fix it.  And we did.

We use Life’s Abundance Agility (which is an amazing product) and Wellesse Joint Movement Glucosamine with Chondroitin + MSM, Natural Berry Flavor (that we mix with plain yogurt as a treat). For pain, we use American Biosciences DGP (Dog Gone Pain) Flexibility For Dogs 60 Tablets.  We only give him the pain medication if he’s having trouble, probably a couple times a month.

The Life’s Abundance Agility is a holistic formula, which means that it takes into account the needs of the whole body, including all the parts that work with the joints.

I know that all of these things will vary by dog, but these work for us and I’m excited to share what’s works for us.

TIP: One more thing, when we give both dogs the glucosamine, we break it into pieces and mix with peanut butter and now it’s their nightly treat.

David the Dog Trainer is a local dog trainer who I discovered online when I was researching dog training techniques in preparation for adopting a puppy.  I’ll be sharing some of my favorite videos that I’ve found to be very helpful.

You’ll find yourself saying “good boyyyy” right along David, because he truly makes training fun.  Something that is very important.  What has worked for us and our littermate puppies is to keep our training sessions to 10 minutes and to keep them fun and happy.
