I had the opportunity to check out The Love That Dog Training ProgramDog Training Tips | The Love That Dog Training Program featured dog training dog behavior book review dog training  written by Dawn Sylvia-Stasiewicz with the help of Larry Kay.  Dawn trained the First Family’s dog, Bo and offers a 5 week dog training program that only takes 10 to 20 minutes a day.

Having already gone through training with our littermates, a year later for a refresher, and most recently with our puppy, I used this book as more of a resource, choosing not to read it from beginning to end.  What I enjoyed were the pictures showing me exactly what I needed to do and the occasional dog training tips in the sidebars.  Dawn and Larry are obviously proponents of positive based training, which falls in line with how we train our dogs.

I’ll be using this book as a training resource for a long time; living with 3 dogs, I can never get enough dog training tips.  I think this is a fantastic book for people who have brought home a new puppy or dog and for dog owners who want to brush up on any dog training lessons.  We find ourselves doing this often as new situations arise.

We read a lot of book before we adopted our littermates and I’m excited to add this one to our library.  I don’t believe a book can replace a one on one with a professional dog trainer, but I do believe that a great book can supplement what a dog trainer teaches us and our pups.

Treats, Play, Love by Patricia Gail Burnham. An updated edition of Playtraing Your Dog. Used her Playtraining book for years. Love it. The training portion is based on the AKC obedience exercises. As with any good training book, you can pick and choose to train keeping in mind what your goals are for you and your pup.

    Hi Kimberly,

Two more books and one comment/warning. :-) Two others I quite like: The Dog Trainer’s Complete Guide to a Happy, Well-Behaved Pet, Jolanta Benal, and Parenting Your Dog, Trish King. Now the warning. I, too, have The Love That Dog Training Program. Was at a book store last weekend and almost bought Training the Best Dog Ever: A 5-Week Program Using Positive Reinforcement. I always check the Amazon reviews (cell phones are an awesome thing) before purchasing. It’s a paperback edition of Love That Dog with a title change. I wouldn’t have caught it without checking the reviews first. Probably should have, but wouldn’t have.

    Happy reading,

    Peggy
