WHAT:  Malachy, 2012 Westminster Kennel Club “Best In Show” winner, bested over 2,000 canines over the two-day event to claim the coveted purple-and-gold ribbon and silver bowl. Before a new prized pooch is crowned on February 12, 2013, the Pekingese will make a personal appearance at the Union Square Petco where he’ll meet and pose for pictures with his dog-loving fans.

Fun Facts about Malachy:

  • The Pekingese breed dates back to ancient China. They are also referred to as Lion-Dogs due to their resemblance to Chinese Guardian Lions.
  • At the 136th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, 11 lb. Malachy took the title of “Best in Show” over large breeds including a Dalmatian, Dachshund, German shepherd, Doberman Pinscher, Irish Setter and Kerry Blue terrier.
  • Malachy was runner up to Hickory, the Scottish deerhound, who was the 2011 Westminster “Best in Show”.

All guests who attend will receive a free photo of Malachy, along with other special offers and discounts from his favorite pet food brand and official pet food sponsor of the 2013 Westminster Dog Show, Purina® Pro Plan®. Malachy’s co-owner and handler, David Fitzpatrick, and Petco store associates will be on hand to answer questions and provide helpful tips on how guests can bring out the best in their very own four-legged champion by making sure they are physically fit, mentally alert, socially engaged and emotionally happy.

Do you ever envision your dog in a dog show?  Or have you had experience with a dog show?  Please share!!!

  1. In a “prior life” I was a breeder/exhibitor of Siberian Huskies. We had some good success in the Southwest, but never made it to Westminster. However, a dog we bred became the first Siberian Husky to win the working group at Westminster, back in the late ’70s – Ch. Inisfree’s Sierra Cinnar. He went on to many group and Best in Show wins. Now I am the proud owner of Dakota, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, strictly a well-loved pet. No more dog shows for me.

    • When I think of our dogs at Westminster, I just crack up. But I would love to go to a dog show just to see how it is. I think it would be an amazing experience. Was your Huskey just a playful dog when at home?

      • Kimberly, you should go to a dog show and observe. It really is interesting to see all the breeds. The huskies I had were all house pets as well as show dogs. They were very playful, happy and silly sometimes. I did have a couple of serious ones who looked down their noses at the goofy ones, but overall Siberian Huskies make excellent family pets. Not watchdogs at all, and rather hard to train as they are very smart and very stubbborn, but they are great dogs.

  2. Malachy looks like a real winner! I used to know a little pekingese mix – very cute dogs!

    • When I saw the pictures, I just wanted to cuddle him up. So gorgeous.
