Sydney is my princess (Princess Pretty Paws), but out of our three dogs, she’s the one who will find the nastiest thing to roll in and proudly prance around, showing off her new smell.
COYOTE NASTINESS (it was a mystery)
GASOLINE OR MOTOR OIL
When I try to spritz her with Bath Fresh Mist or their flea and tick repellent, Bright Eyes Pet Wellness, she gets so upset. She’ll tolerate a bath, but is itching to get outside to find something to roll in. At least she doesn’t roll in dog or coyote poo.
But why do dogs roll in smelly things?
I was over on Oui in France and discovered the answer. This dog mom actually looked it up on the ASPCA’s site and taught me that dogs roll in smelly things, because…
Dogs roll in smelly things “to mask their natural scent, allowing them to camouflage themselves and be sneakier hunters.
Dogs cover themselves in the nasty smell to tell other dogs about what they found. (When other dogs sniff your pup, they’ll get the exciting news that there’s a dead animal in the neighborhood.)
Dogs love to roll on gross things to claim them as their own. They don’t want competition!”
~ Thank you for enlightening me – Oui in France
So it goes back to instincts, right? Sydney doesn’t hunt for food, but she does hunt with her brothers for mice and moles. I try not to give her a hard time, because she’s so happy. Instead, I keep an eye on her, because she does give tells when she’s about to roll and can (hopefully) stop her before she stops, drops, and rolls in something smelly.
