When I read the news of The Honest Kitchen recall, I was stunned. But then I realized that every pet food manufacturer is at risk for a pet food recall; it’s how they handle the recall that matters. Do they announce it immediately to their customers or do they hide behind misinformation and redirection until they can no longer ignore the hundreds of pets who have died, because of their product?
The Honest Kitchen Recall
Greetings Allies and Demo Representatives,
I’m writing to let you know that today, The Honest Kitchen is announcing a voluntary and limited recall of 5 lots of food produced from August – November 2012, due to possible Salmonella contamination. As a human-grade pet food manufacture, I can honestly say that The Honest Kitchen has done everything in our power to prevent this from happening. It’s important to note that to date, we have had absolutely no positive tests for Salmonella and no reports of illness; however, a supplier has informed us that they have found a positive Salmonella test from the same batch we used in our food.

I agree, it’s all in how they handle it.
When I was taking a PR class in college we studied to cases of products that were recalled.
The one who was upfront, and kept their consumers aware of what was happening was the one who rode the wave virtually unscathed. The other, who simply recalled their product and then had no press updates really suffered.
In this world of mass production with the need to manufacture so much, there are bound to be instances where this type of thing happens. I would certainly have no problems buying an HK product. But I will never again buy a product from any of the companies that refuse to recall their contaminated chicken products.

Great points, Jodi
I’m with you when it comes to the chicken. It’ll be interesting to see if people forget or if the businesses will truly be impacted by their failure to act.

When we get back to holding businesses accountable for their actions they will begin to provide us with the products and level of service we demand. I like the way this company handled it. Thanks for sharing!

Exactly! Many companies can learn a lot from how THK is handling their recall.

Wow, thanks for the heads up. I try to keep my food separated in their individual bags—that way, if a recall is issued, I can easily get rid of it.
…Wouldn’t the cooking/dehydrating process kill the salmonella bacteria? I’ll have to look into that one

I believe the biggest concern with Salmonella is that we handle the food and if we don’t wash our hands carefully enough, we (the humans) get sick. Don’t quote me on this; I’ve heard that dogs are safe from Salmonella and I’ve heard that they aren’t.
